Making Big Data a success in Bavaria – Recommendations

Mastering Big Data is one of the key challenges for the Bavarian economy. Following its motto “Designing the Digital Future”, the vbw Council for the Future of the Bavarian Economy organized a conference on Big Data in Munich in July 2016 (see next article in this newsletter).

At the conference, the Council for the Future published a new report on the opportunities and challenges for Big Data in Bavaria. According to the report, Big Data technologies can add 0.3 percent to Bavaria’s economic growth every year over the next ten years.

Alfred Gaffal, the Chairman of the Council for the Future and President of the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw), also presented the Council’s main strategic recommendations.

Big Data in Bavaria’s key technologies

Big Data plays an important role in Bavaria’s future technologies. It will accelerate Bavaria’s traditionally strong industry sector.

However, as a research location for Big Data there is room for improvement, despite Bavaria’s excellent research institutions such as Technical University Munich or the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen-Nürnberg.

As a consequence, the Council for the Future recommends the creation of an advanced IT and communications infrastructure, with a bandwidth of at least 100 megabit per second until 2020. In addition, the Bavarian state government must pursue and expand its “Bavaria Digital” strategy, for example by establishing secure cloud technologies.

Adopting Big Data in enterprises

Today many enterprises already use Big Data technologies to improve operations management, reduce costs or facilitate decision-making. Large corporations in particular have discovered the potential of Big Data. By contrast, small and medium businesses often hesitate to employ Big Data.

With its strategic recommendations, the Council for the Future aims to assist companies of all sizes – in Bavaria and beyond – to seize the potential of Big Data.

The legal framework for Big Data

One of the key challenges for Big Data is the regulatory framework, especially legislation on data protection. The recommendations of the Council of the Future illustrate how a modern Big Data legislation can create a legal framework which is reliable, secure and at the same time open to innovation.
