Focus on Big Data

Bavaria has an international reputation as a hot spot for high-tech and innovation. However, it is exposed to forces like globalization and digitalization which are transforming technologies and business models across the world.

To make sure that Bavaria is ready for the future, the President of the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw), Alfred Gaffal, established the vbw Council for the Future of the Bavarian Economy in 2014.

The main purpose of the Council for the Future is to inform Bavarian businesses about the success factors for maintaining Bavaria’s position as a technological leader in increasingly competitive global markets. It is vital that the excellent research and development activity in Bavaria is translated into practical applications.

Showcasing Bavaria’s Future Technologies

On July 8, 2015, the Council for the Future presented its recommendations for the first time at a conference in Munich, drawing on the vbw study Bavaria’s Future Technologies.

In the last editions of this newsletter, we have introduced some of the innovative technological applications developed in Bavaria and showcased at the conference.

Focus on Big Data in 2016

For 2016, the Council for the Future has chosen Designing the Digital Future as its guiding theme. In particular, it wants to illustrate the social and economical revolutions caused by digitalization – and develop strategies for Bavaria to master these challenges successfully.

The first topic to be discussed this year by the Council for the Future is Big Data – the rapid growth of available data from various sources and the increasingly sophisticated methods used to process and analyze it.

While Big Data allows businesses to improve their products and unveil innovative business models, it also raises important questions about data privacy and data protection.

On July 18, 2016, the conference Digital Future: Big Data will bring together the experts of the Council for the Future of the Bavarian Economy with senior representatives from politics, science and business to discuss the most important issues around Big Data.

More information about the work of the Council for the Future will be featured in the upcoming editions of this newsletter.
